The CERNEC brain imaging research centre accommodates 32 researchers and 145 students and was inserted into an occupied university building with funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation.
DMA proposed a solution that maintained as much of the existing conditions while still allowing for the upgrade of the mechanical and electrical systems and also respecting the manufacturers' recommendations for the specialized brain imaging equipment. However, it was necessary to completely re-design a section of the building in order to install the required equipment and the spaces for the research facilities. The firm took charge of planning all aspects of the project including a detailed survey of the existing conditions, the development of a functional and technical program, the preliminary plans, the construction plans and specifications, the furniture schedules, the construction supervision and commissioning. DMA also managed the coordination of the other disciplines such as structural, electrical and mechanical engineering as well as with the specialized equipment suppliers.
