DMA was hired by the University of Montreal to develop a detailed Master Plan to allow the university to either optimize its available space or to build the required space, to suit the needs on one hand and to fit within the constraints on the other. The Master Space Plan was based on an exhaustive and detailed evaluation of the current space utilization and requirements in the short term. This evaluation was not only quantitative but also qualitative. In effect, the mathematical calculation of required areas is not in itself a guarantee that the functional needs will be met. The organization of the different functions within the space, the relationship between groups (or isolation), the environmental requirements whether physical or aesthetic, all contribute to the long term viability of the space in the medium and long term.
