The growth of the student population has driven Polytechnique Montréal to produce a Master Plan that will orient the campus development to reflects its vision and future needs.
The recent acquisition of the J.-A.-Bombardier Pavilion (PJAB) will partially address the need for research laboratories, but more importantly, a new connection to the Pavilion Principal through a new pavilion built into the mountain will create a dynamic link that promotes circulation, fosters interaction, provide a space for student life, and facilitates technical operations.
The project represents the first step to accomplish the overall vision and includes several interventions, such as the reorganization of circulation routes to provide a new connection to the mountain; the expansion and renovation of PJAB (7,200 square meters); the redevelopment of part of Pavillon Principal (9,600 square meters); and the creation of a new underground support and research spaces connecting the pavilions together and with the Lassonde pavilion.

The project aims to create a revamped plaza for the campus with a pedestrian-friendly environment by relocating the loading dock, parking and main vehicular access to the back of the JAB pavilion. This area will be transformed into a green pathway linking the campus to the mountain, with a pedestrian route connecting the Pavillon Principal and PJAB.
The design of the PJAB extension is inspired by the original project, extending the central volume to the edge of the brick band. The new materiality is in continuity with the dark brick aesthetic while also reflecting the historical evolution of the extension. As such, the new façades will be clad in clay terracotta tiles remaining simple and elegant, respecting the surrounding buildings and the heritage character of the Mount Royal site.
The redevelopment of wings F and G of the Pavillon Principal provides an opportunity to revive the interior layout and strengthen the connection between students and their surroundings by creating openings on the façade to increase exterior views. To be effective, these openings will be aligned with main circulation paths and located adjacent to open student spaces. The project reinforces Polytechnique Montréal’s leadership in sustainable development by implementing a cohesive strategy of certification and innovation for the university campus.
